My Story
I knew I wanted to pursue music therapy from an early age. My Jr. High guidance counselor gave the class a survey of hundreds of possible occupations and told us to pick out our ten top choices. I only picked one! And I didn’t have to go far to find a school offering the degree program. The University of Alabama has a nationally renowned program where I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy, completing my studies with a six month internship in Hospice/Palliative care in Western North Carolina. I sat for my national board certification exam and began working as a music therapist and activity assistant at a skilled nursing facility. I continued this work for seven years, spending the last year at UAB Hospital in Birmingham working throughout the hospital in medical music therapy.
I took an extended break from working as a music therapist when I married and started a family. I started Mountain Brook Music Therapy when I realized that more and more families are choosing to find ways to keep their loved ones home for longer before moving to a nursing home or rehab facility. Music therapy is a perfect fit for the wholistic approach to health care that has begun to take hold with our aging population and people of all ages and stages of life. The research is catching up to what we all already know: music heals! I am so proud to serve as a practitioner and ambassador for my field here in Birmingham and I look forward to hearing how I can support you and your family today!
